UCC Norwell Sheds Light on the Rise of Christian Nationalism with Documentary Screening and Discussion

On May 20, 2024 UCC Norwell's Racial Justice Ministry Team (RJMT) hosted a screening of the documentary God & Country, which explores the rise of Christian Nationalism in the United States. The event drew approximately 80 community members to the Cameo Theater in South Weymouth, Massachusetts. The audience was welcomed by Rev. Leanne Walt who offered a brief prayer emphasizing God’s love.

Educational event about Christian Nationalism

The documentary, based on Katherine Stewart's book The Power Worshippers, examines how the Christian Nationalist movement leverages Christianity to gain political influence. Following the film, Rev. Barry Lynn, an ordained UCC minister, member of the Supreme Court Bar, and retired Executive Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, provided insight into his dealings, discussions, and debates with many of the key characters in the documentary. Barry fielded and addressed several questions from the audience including how active CN is in Massachusetts and how to have difficult conversations with friends and family.

Combating hatred through education and compassion

"Many people are unaware of the organized nature and dangers of Christian Nationalism," said Jack Spurr, co-chair of the Racial Justice Ministry Team. "This movement is a threat, and God & Country serves as an excellent educational resource." The documentary is available for home viewing on streaming services like Amazon Prime.

Goal 4.3 of UCC Norwell’s strategic plan calls for the RJMT to create a broad-based movement of education and compassion in response to the hatred, division, and violence generated by the CN movement. Our mission is to show the world that Christianity is about spreading God’s LOVE through Jesus to all people, inclusive of all who are marginalized and most in need, and respecting and embracing diverse religious and cultural practices and communities. We believe only LOVE can transform a world where there is too much fear, hatred, and violence into a world of kindness, justice, and peace.

Stay informed and engaged

You can watch God & Country at home on several streaming services.
