Serving our neighbors: A Thanksgiving of gratitude and giving
Working with L-Street is one way we show our Confirmands that long Sunday lessons are more than just talk. We invite the future of our church to live their faith and join our ministries so they might understand and appreciate the work of those who have paved these paths. We trust they are ready to be our future, prepared for responsibility and trust beyond their age. After all, how many other eighth graders gave up an evening and morning of Thanksgiving weekend to cook for and serve others? Giving up precious vacation time is tough, but caring for one's neighbor is rarely convenient. As we give thanks and leave full tables, we gather to cook for and serve those hungry, cold, and unhoused. Our neighbors have names, faces, and stories that are children of God, but how would we know them if we did not travel to Brockton, go to the needy, rather than have them come to us? I am so proud of our Confirmands for their maturity and selflessness. I didn't have to beg them to give up their time, to make a trek through parades and traffic jams. It does the heart good to witness cheerful, willing service and love. Our future is in good hands. Thanks to the generous giving of our church, part of the Mission + Outreach budget goes to covering the costs of feeding L-Street guests, on Thanksgiving and throughout the year. These delicious and healthy meals are faithfully prepared by our church volunteers.
