A Saturday of service at L Street Mission
Mark Newby, a member of the UCC Norwell congregation and a regular volunteer at the L Street Mission, recently experienced a rewarding Saturday morning. Serving meals at L Street Mission is a collective effort, with the Cooking for a Cause chefs, whose dedication is showcased in the accompanying photo gallery, playing a vital role in preparing the delicious breakfast other served on Saturday.
Last Saturday morning I drove to the L Street Mission in Brockton with two old Norwell friends. Upon arrival we were greeted by Geoff Gordon in the parking lot and once inside we met up with Nancy Moses and Paul Allen. The hot meal for breakfast made by our own Cooking for a Cause the previous night was delivered by Susan Allen. We were all busy serving the long line of guests when Gwen Morgan tapped me on the shoulder as she was stopping by.
Later in the morning Coleen Benedict came along with 3 other volunteers from Marshfield Boys and Girls Club.
It is hard to come up with another organization that has more hands-on support from members of UCC Norwell on a weekly basis than the L Street Mission. The only exception may be the Food Circle which happens to deliver to L Street on Saturdays.
I was reminded by Paul Allen that Rev Abraham started L Street as a lunch program for Brockton’s unhoused population years ago. It was Susan Allen back in March of 2021, that wanted to expand into breakfast as well as lunch. She started alone with a coffee urn and a few baked goods. Now on any given Saturday between 50 and 100 guests are served both breakfast and lunch. Nancy Moses told me that the week before they went through a record 27 dozen eggs!
My crew of three left just before lunch because there were more volunteers arriving. It was wonderful seeing all the UCC Norwell love in action on L Street.
